The short answer
How can clinical hypnotherapy help a busy executive?
Clinical hypnotherapy works directly with the unconscious patterns behind anxiety, poor sleep, low confidence and unwanted habits, the ones willpower alone rarely shifts. For executives, it is a focused, evidence-informed way to change how you respond under pressure. As a master hypnotherapist, Nicky Anstey uses it to make calm, confidence and successful strategies more automatic and natural by rewiring the foundational mindset of the leader to be and feel more equipped for success.
About this work
What clinical hypnotherapy for executives actually is
Clinical hypnotherapy for executives is the clinical application of a hypnotic (relaxed) state to directly access and change the unconscious neurological programmes that produce anxiety, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, people-pleasing, and the extreme pressure that drives burnout in high achievers. It is a specific, evidence-supported clinical process that allows access to the subcortical patterns that standard coaching and therapy cannot reliably reach. Nicky Anstey is a Master Hypnotherapist who uses clinical hypnotherapy as a core tool within the REWIRE Method™, in combination with NLP coaching, Time Line Therapy™, neuroscience and psychotherapy, to produce permanent neurological change in business owners and senior executives.
Why clinical hypnotherapy deserves serious attention
Most scepticism about hypnotherapy is scepticism about stage hypnosis and the entertainment industry version. That scepticism is reasonable. Stage hypnosis is a performance. Clinical hypnotherapy is a clinical intervention with a meaningful evidence base, used within legitimate healthcare settings.
The British Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the Royal Society of Medicine, and an extensive body of published research support the clinical application of hypnotherapy for anxiety, phobias, pain management, and performance issues. It is used in clinical oncology for pain and anxiety management. It is used in surgical settings. It is used in the management of IBS with NICE-approved protocols. Scepticism about whether it works is not well-supported by the evidence. The question is not whether it works. The question is how it works and what it works for.
What the hypnotic state actually is
The hypnotic state is not unconsciousness. It is not sleep. It is not the loss of control depicted in entertainment versions of hypnosis.
It is a naturally occurring state of focused attention in which the critical faculty, the part of the mind that evaluates, judges, and filters, is temporarily reduced, and the unconscious mind becomes more directly accessible and more receptive to change.
This state occurs naturally in everyday life. The absorption in a book where you read several pages without quite registering them. The state you are in when you drive a familiar route and arrive without remembering the journey. The creative flow state where ideas arrive fully formed without a deliberate reasoning process. These are all forms of the focused-attention, reduced-critical-faculty state that clinical hypnotherapy deliberately induces for therapeutic purposes.
In the clinical context, this state allows a skilled hypnotherapist to communicate directly with the unconscious mind, bypassing the conscious filtering that normally prevents access to the deeper patterns. In this state, the neurological programmes producing unwanted responses can be accessed and changed in a way that is not available through ordinary waking work.
How the work moves
How clinical hypnotherapy works within the REWIRE Method™
Within the REWIRE Method™, clinical hypnotherapy serves a specific function: it provides direct access to the unconscious patterns identified through the NLP diagnostic work, and creates the neurological conditions for those patterns to be changed.
The sequence is important. The hypnotherapy is not used as a standalone intervention, and it is not used to suggest generic positive outcomes. It is used to access the specific pattern that the NLP diagnostic work has mapped, and to apply the specific change techniques that the pattern structure calls for.
This is why clinical hypnotherapy for executives through the REWIRE Method™ is different from a generic hypnotherapy session. It is not “receive suggestions about confidence”. It is “access the specific unconscious programme producing your imposter syndrome response, disrupt its structure, and install the new neurological pathway established in the NLP work.”
The precision is what produces the quality and durability of the change.
What clinical hypnotherapy can and cannot do
I want to be direct about this, because there is a great deal of overclaiming in this space.
Clinical hypnotherapy can effectively access and change unconscious patterns producing anxiety, specific fears and phobias, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, people-pleasing, performance anxiety, and the stress response patterns underlying high-functioning burnout. This is the clinical territory in which it is well-supported by evidence and well-evidenced by clinical practice.
Clinical hypnotherapy cannot make you do things against your values. The idea of the hypnotherapist as a controller with access to your mind is a fiction. The hypnotic state is a state of enhanced responsiveness to suggestion, not a state of suspended agency. You will not accept suggestions that conflict with your core values. You remain in control of the process.
Clinical hypnotherapy is not a treatment for psychosis, severe clinical depression, or other serious mental health conditions. If you are in a mental health crisis, please seek clinical medical support.
For the specific patterns it addresses, in the specific population I work with, clinical hypnotherapy is one of the most effective tools available for producing rapid and permanent change.
Between-session hypnotherapy recordings
Within the REWIRE coaching programme, clients receive personalised hypnotherapy recordings for use between sessions, which can be used forever to reinforce all the positive learnings. These recordings are not generic relaxation or motivation content. They are built around the specific rewiring work done in sessions, that originate from your unconscious learnings, reinforcing the new neurological pathways being established and accelerating their consolidation.
The brain consolidates new pathways through repetition. The between-session recordings provide that repetition in a specifically targeted, unconscious-mind-accessible format. Clients who engage consistently with the learnings, frameworks, skills and recordings typically progress more quickly through the rewiring phase than those who do not.
This is the same principle as physical therapy homework after an orthopaedic intervention: the in-session work creates the change, and the between-session practice consolidates it.
Hypnotherapy and the physiology of stress
Clinical hypnotherapy has direct effects on the nervous system that are relevant to the physiological dimension of extreme pressure. The hypnotic state activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the rest-and-digest system, counteracting the chronic sympathetic activation that characterises the high-functioning anxiety state many business owners are living in.
Repeated access to this state, both in sessions and through recordings, contributes to the gradual downregulation of the chronic stress response, allowing the nervous system to recalibrate toward a lower baseline of activation. This has measurable effects on cortisol regulation, sleep quality, immune function, and cognitive performance.
This is part of why the nutritional and physiological dimension of the REWIRE Method™ works in conjunction with the hypnotherapy: the physiology and the neurology support each other’s recovery.
What to expect from clinical hypnotherapy sessions
Clients who come to clinical hypnotherapy with a background of scepticism consistently describe two things: the sessions feel nothing like what they expected, and the results are nothing like what they expected.
A clinical hypnotherapy session in the context of the REWIRE Method™ is a structured, directed process. You are not passive. You are engaged. The hypnotic state is deeper than ordinary conversation and different in quality, but it is not strange or uncomfortable. Most clients describe it as deeply focused and often as one of the most interesting experiences they have had.
The changes that follow a session are not always immediately obvious. Some are. The acute anxiety response that was there before a specific situation is simply not there. A belief that was solid feels different, less certain, less attached. Others unfold over the following days and weeks as the new pathways consolidate.
If you want to understand the full process and how hypnotherapy fits within it, the REWIRE Method™ page is the comprehensive resource. If you are ready to find out whether this is the right approach for you, the Reset Call is the place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Can everyone be hypnotised?
Virtually everyone can enter a hypnotic state, as it is a naturally occurring form of focused attention. The degree of hypnotic responsiveness varies between individuals, but the state required for clinical hypnotherapy is accessible to the vast majority of people who are willing to engage with the process. Deep somnambulistic trance is not required for effective clinical hypnotherapy. Remember a day dream is a hypnotic state. Emersed in focus of a lecture, or film is a form of hypnosis, so its perfectly natural and you are doing it all the time. Only this time we are ensuring what you take on is all positive.
-
Will I be unconscious or unable to remember the session?
No. You will be aware throughout the session. You will hear everything that happens and will be able to recall it. The hypnotic state is not unconsciousness or sleep, despite the similarity in appearance. The feeling of drifting in and out of the state is normal as so relaxing, so you may think you have forgotten some of what has been said but it will be in there unconsciously and you have the recordings and transcripts to refer to after anyway.
-
Can hypnotherapy make me do things against my will?
No. This is a fiction from stage hypnosis. In the clinical hypnotic state, you retain your values, your judgement, and your agency. You will not accept suggestions that conflict with your core values or that you would object to in an ordinary waking state. The state is enhanced receptiveness, not suspended will.
-
Is hypnotherapy used in mainstream medicine?
Yes. Clinical hypnotherapy is approved by NICE for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. It is used in oncology settings for pain and anxiety management. The British Medical Association endorsed its clinical use as long ago as 1955. It has a substantial clinical history and evidence base in legitimate healthcare.
You may have heard of dentists using hypnotherapy instead of anaesthetic injections for abstractions or fillings? Or you may have experienced hypno-birthing during labour? Or you may have heard of it being used for anxiety and depression? These are just a few but much more mainstream now. -
What is the difference between hypnotherapy for performance and hypnotherapy for entertainment?
Stage or entertainment hypnosis is a performance designed to produce entertaining behaviour in consenting participants in a social context. Those on stage are the types of people who deep down are exhibitionists at heart and like being the centre of attention – so open to whatever is asked of them. I was not able to be hypnotised on stage as wasn’t in my character to do what they were asking. But I go into hypnosis easily when I know what we are installing or enhancing.
Clinical hypnotherapy is a structured intervention using the hypnotic state to access and change specific neurological patterns producing unwanted psychological and behavioural outcomes. They use the same basic state but for entirely different purposes and through entirely different methods.

How does hypnotherapy fit into the REWIRE Method™?
Within the REWIRE Method™, clinical hypnotherapy is used in the rewiring phase to access the unconscious patterns identified in the NLP diagnostic work and to apply change techniques at the neurological level. It is not used as a standalone intervention but as part of a clinically integrated process. Between sessions, personalised hypnotherapy recordings reinforce the rewiring work done in sessions.
