The short answer
What is imposter syndrome coaching, and who is it for?
Imposter syndrome coaching is one-to-one work that resolves the root belief of feeling like a fraud, not just the surface habits it creates. It is leadership rewiring for founders, executives and high performers who succeed outwardly yet privately fear being exposed. Using the REWIRE Method™, it rebuilds genuine self-trust so confidence becomes your baseline, not a performance you fight to keep up.

The pattern underneath
The kind of imposter syndrome at work that lives in high achievers
There is a version of imposter syndrome that belongs to people who are out of their depth. They are doing something they have not done before and are not yet competent at, and the feeling reflects that accurately. That is not what this is about.
The imposter syndrome I work with lives in people who are demonstrably good at what they do. People with track records. With results. With teams and clients and revenues that stand as evidence of genuine capability. And it does not care about any of that evidence. It runs right alongside the success, whispering that the success is fluke, that the next decision is the one that exposes them, that everyone around them has a level of certainty they are secretly faking.
You have probably tried to argue with it. Compiled the evidence of your competence. Told yourself to stop overthinking. And you have probably found that the logic lands intellectually and does nothing to the feeling.
This is because the feeling is not coming from your thinking brain. It is coming from your unconscious, from a wired pattern that was built long before your business existed, and possibly long before you were old enough to have any business at all. You cannot reason it away. You have to rewire it.

Hi, I'm Nicky Anstey
Award Winning Leadership Rewiring Specialist, Author and Speaker
I spent over a decade stuck in the cycle of extreme pressure, high-functioning burnout, driven by perfectionism, people-pleasing and Imposter Syndrome.
Now I help successful business owners and senior leaders rewire those patterns that keep them stuck in survival mode and become the bottleneck in their business.
I’ve lived that cycle myself and know success should not cost you your health, happiness or relationships.
How the work moves
How Imposter Syndrome Coaching Works
The approach I use in imposter syndrome coaching is grounded in the REWIRE Method™, a trademarked leadership rewiring process that combines NLP, clinical hypnotherapy, Executive performance coaching and psychotherapy to access and rewire the unconscious patterns running beneath the surface behaviour.
Name the exact type
The Perfectionist. The Expert. The Soloist. The Natural Genius. The Superhero. We identify the precise form your imposter syndrome takes.
Rewire the unconscious belief
Using psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and NLP, the belief that worth is conditional and about to be revoked loses its charge.

We rebuild your identity and work around the new pattern. Confidence stops being a performance you put on every morning. It becomes natural with solid foundations.
- Praise lands instead of being deflected.
- Pitches get steadier. Asks get bigger.

What the research says about imposter syndrome
Written and reviewed by Nicky Anstey, Executive Psychotherapist, Master NLP Coach and Master Hypnotherapist (East Sussex and Godalming, Surrey). Last reviewed 23 July 2026.
Imposter syndrome is far more common among high achievers than most people assume, and it is well documented. An often-quoted estimate suggests around 70% of people experience it at some point (Sakulku & Alexander, 2011), though that figure is best read as an estimate rather than a hard measurement. The most rigorous review to date, a 2020 systematic review in the Journal of General Internal Medicine covering 62 studies and 14,161 people, found prevalence ranging from 9% to 82% depending on how it is measured (Bravata et al., 2020). Among senior leaders the figures run higher: a 2020 KPMG study of 750 executive women found 75% had experienced it in their careers, and 81% put more pressure on themselves not to fail than their male peers (KPMG, 2020).
It matters because it rarely travels alone. As the Journal of General Internal Medicine review concluded:
“Impostor syndrome is often comorbid with depression and anxiety and is associated with impaired job performance, job satisfaction, and burnout among various employee populations including clinicians.”
Bravata et al., Journal of General Internal Medicine, 2020
What are the signs of imposter syndrome in high achievers?
Imposter syndrome is a recognisable pattern rather than a clinical diagnosis. In business owners and executives it often shows up as:
- Persistent self-doubt that success never quite silences, no matter the track record
- Attributing wins to luck, timing or other people rather than your own ability
- A quiet fear of being “found out” or exposed as less capable than you appear
- Over-preparing, over-working and struggling to delegate
- Difficulty accepting praise, and often under-charging or under-selling
- Holding back from opportunities you are more than qualified for
Is imposter syndrome a mental illness or a medical diagnosis?
No. Imposter syndrome is not a recognised clinical or medical diagnosis, and it is not listed as a disorder. It is a well-studied psychological pattern of thinking and self-perception. That distinction matters: it means it is learned, and what is learned can be changed. If you would like the full picture, read what imposter syndrome actually is in our complete guide.
What causes imposter syndrome?
There is no single cause. It is most often linked to early messages about achievement and worth, to high-pressure or high-achieving environments, and to being an outlier in a room. For founders and leaders it is frequently reinforced by isolation at the top and by roles where the stakes and visibility keep rising. In practice it is a wired pattern, built long before your business existed.
Does imposter syndrome go away on its own?
Rarely. Because it is a learned, largely unconscious pattern rather than a passing mood, it tends to persist, and for many leaders it intensifies as responsibility and visibility grow. It does respond well to focused psychological work that resolves the underlying belief rather than managing the symptoms.
The five types of imposter syndrome
Imposter syndrome is not one thing. Building on the original 1978 research by psychologists Pauline Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes, Dr Valerie Young identified five “competence types”, each with a different hidden rule for what counts as good enough (Impostor Syndrome Institute):
- The Perfectionist: it has to be flawless, and success never feels earned. (This overlaps closely with perfectionism.)
- The Expert: I should know everything before I act or speak
- The Natural Genius: if it takes real effort, I must be a fraud
- The Soloist: asking for help is proof of inadequacy, so I do it alone
- The Superhuman: I must excel in every role at once
Who this is for, and when therapy is the better route
Imposter syndrome coaching is for capable, high-functioning founders, executives and professionals who are succeeding on the outside but privately battling self-doubt, and who want to resolve it at the root. It is not therapy, and it is not a substitute for medical or mental-health care. If you are dealing with a diagnosed mental-health condition, or with depression, an anxiety disorder or thoughts of self-harm, please speak to your GP or a registered clinician first. This work also sits alongside related patterns Nicky helps with, including people-pleasing and anxiety, pressure and overwhelm.

Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is imposter syndrome exactly and how do I know if I have it?
Imposter syndrome is the persistent internal experience of not deserving your success, combined with a fear that you will be found out as less capable than others believe you to be. In business owners, it typically shows up as chronic self-doubt about decisions, difficulty accepting credit for results, overworking to compensate for a perceived inadequacy, and undercharging relative to the value delivered. If you can recognise yourself in that description, it is likely running in you to some degree.
-
Can you have imposter syndrome even if you are highly successful?
Yes. In fact, the higher the achievement, often the more intense the imposter syndrome. Success does not resolve it, because it is not a reflection of your actual competence. It is a wired pattern in the unconscious mind. The evidence of success and the feeling of not being enough can run simultaneously and indefinitely.
-
How long does it take to rewire imposter syndrome?
Within the REWIRE coaching programme, most clients notice a significant shift in the imposter syndrome pattern within the first three to four weeks of the rewiring phase. Full integration typically takes the eight-week programme. Individual timescales depend on how long the pattern has been running and what other patterns are operating alongside it.
-
Is imposter syndrome coaching different from therapy for low self-esteem?
Yes. Therapy for low self-esteem typically works through insight, processing, and gradual cognitive and emotional shift at the conscious level. Imposter syndrome coaching through the REWIRE Method™ works at the unconscious level, using Executive performance coaching, psychotherapy, NLP and clinical hypnotherapy to directly access and change the patterns producing the imposter syndrome response. It is faster, more targeted, and produces permanent rather than managed change.
-
What if my imposter syndrome is mixed in with perfectionism and anxiety?
That is very common. The REWIRE Method™ addresses patterns as a system, not individually, precisely because they rarely appear in isolation. The diagnostic phase maps the full pattern cluster, and the rewiring work addresses all of it.
-
I run a successful business. Do I really need coaching for this?
Your success has been achieved in spite of the imposter syndrome, not because of it, and at a significant cost in terms of wasted energy, delayed decisions, and internal strain. The question is not whether you can continue to perform with it running. The question is how much further and faster you would go without it, and what the quality of your experience of the business would be.
-
How is this different from reading books about imposter syndrome or doing an online course?
Books and courses operate at the conscious, intellectual level. They provide understanding and cognitive strategies. Imposter syndrome coaching through the REWIRE Method™ operates at the unconscious level, which is where the pattern actually lives. Understanding imposter syndrome and changing the neurological wiring that produces it are two entirely different things.
