The short answer

What is psychotherapy for business leaders?

This is confidential psychotherapy designed for the realities of leadership, the pressure, isolation and self-doubt founders rarely voice. It goes beneath performance to resolve what’s actually driving stress, anxiety or burnout. Led by an executive psychotherapist, it helps you understand yourself, process what’s underneath and lead from a steadier, more resilient place.

About this work

What psychotherapy for business leaders means in this context

Psychotherapy for business leaders is the application of psychotherapy to the specific patterns and pressures of running a business or holding a senior leadership position at high altitude. It addresses the deeper psychological roots of the patterns that limit leadership performance: where perfectionism, people-pleasing, and imposter syndrome originally came from, what relational and historical context built them, and what it takes to change them at that depth.

Nicky Anstey is an Executive Psychotherapist who integrates psychotherapy within the REWIRE Method™, a trademarked process combining NLP, clinical hypnotherapy, and nutritional science, to address business leaders’ patterns at both the root cause and the neurological level.

Why business leaders often need something more than coaching

There is a point at which coaching alone reaches its limit.

Coaching is extraordinarily valuable for goal-setting, accountability, strategic thinking, and the external architecture of high performance. A good coach holds a leader to their best thinking and challenges them to apply it consistently. For many people, in many contexts, coaching is exactly the right intervention.

But for some patterns, in some people, at some depth, coaching works at a level that is not where the problem lives.

When a business leader has tried multiple coaches, genuinely engaged with the work, understood the patterns intellectually, and still found themselves reverting to the same behaviour under pressure, the issue is not that they have not tried hard enough. It is that the pattern has a belief at the roots that are older and deeper than a coaching framework can reach.

Perfectionism that was built in childhood to earn love in an environment where love was conditional on performance. People-pleasing that was installed to manage the emotional volatility of a difficult early environment. Imposter syndrome that was wired in by an experience of public failure or humiliation at a formative age. These are not surface beliefs. They are deep structural patterns with specific relational histories.

Psychotherapy for business leaders provides the framework for working at this depth. Not to dwell in the past. To understand the structure of what was built there, so it can be changed and released.

What psychotherapy is and is not

Psychotherapy is a broad term covering a range of clinical approaches to psychological wellbeing and change. What connects them is the depth of the work: psychotherapy tends to engage with the underlying causes of patterns, including their developmental, relational, and experiential roots, rather than with just the surface behaviours and thoughts those causes produce.

This is different from coaching, which is primarily focused on the present and future, on goals, strategies, and behaviour. It is different from CBT, which focuses on identifying and changing cognitive distortions. It is different from generic counselling, which tends to focus on processing and emotional support rather than on structural change.

In the context of the REWIRE Method™, psychotherapy is the tool for reaching the historical and relational roots of the patterns being rewired. It ensures that the NLP and hypnotherapy work is built on an accurate, deep understanding of the pattern, rather than targeting a symptom without addressing its source.

Psychotherapy for business leaders in this context is not about pathologising leadership. It is not about deciding that a high-achieving business person is damaged or broken. It is about recognising that the beliefs and patterns that are now limiting their leadership were built by experience, that those experiences can be understood and worked with, and that understanding them properly is what makes the change permanent rather than temporary.

How the work moves

The specific depth psychotherapy adds to the REWIRE Method™

Within the REWIRE Method™, psychotherapy provides three things that coaching and NLP alone do not.

Historical mapping. Psychotherapy provides tools for identifying where a pattern was built, in what relational context, and what specific experience or set of experiences created it. This is not always necessary for effective pattern change, but it is often critical for patterns that have been running for a long time, are particularly resistant, or are strongly tied to specific relational contexts (for example, imposter syndrome that fires specifically around authority figures, or people-pleasing that is most intense in family business contexts).

Relational processing. Some patterns are not just neurological programmes. They carry emotional weight from the relational context in which they were built. Psychotherapy provides the clinical framework for processing that weight, so it does not remain as a live charge underneath the changed wiring. Without this, even well-executed NLP and hypnotherapy work can be undermined by unprocessed emotional material.

Depth for complex presentations. Where a business leader presents with a complex pattern picture, where multiple issues are interacting, where there is a history of significant trauma or loss, or where the presentation has elements that go beyond the standard perfectionism-imposter-syndrome-people-pleasing cluster, psychotherapy provides the clinical depth to work with that complexity safely and effectively.

Psychotherapy for business leaders: breaking the stigma

Many of the business leaders I work with took a long time to get to therapy, or to anything that might be labelled as therapy. There is a particular barrier in high-achieving, high-performing professional culture to acknowledging that the inner self needs attention. They internalise it as weakness. As something that happens to other people. As a sign that something is fundamentally wrong.

None of that is accurate, but the cultural pressure is real.

What is also real is this: the leaders who have the most impact, who lead with the most clarity, and who build the strongest organisations are very often the ones who have done the deepest internal work. Not because they are damaged and have fixed themselves. Because they know themselves with a precision that is unusual. Elevated. And that self-knowledge makes every leadership decision cleaner and every relationship more genuine.

Psychotherapy for business leaders is not a last resort. It is an advanced tool for people who are already performing well and want to go further, quicker and sustainably.

How this work is delivered

Psychotherapy is embedded within the REWIRE coaching programme: the eight-week one-to-one process that is the primary vehicle for the REWIRE Method™. The psychotherapeutic dimension runs through the diagnostic phase, where the historical roots of patterns are mapped, and the rewiring phase, where those roots are addressed alongside the NLP and hypnotherapy work.

The integration of all tools within a single, coherent process, rather than as separate disciplines working independently, is what makes the results qualitatively different from working with multiple separate practitioners.

If you want to understand how the full method works, the REWIRE Method™ page gives the complete picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between psychotherapy and counselling?

Counselling and psychotherapy overlap significantly in common usage, but psychotherapy generally refers to a deeper, more clinically rigorous process that addresses the structural roots of psychological patterns, often requiring extended work. Counselling tends to be more focused on emotional support and processing in the context of specific difficulties. In practice, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but the depth of training and clinical approach differs between practitioners.

  • I have had therapy before and found it slow and not very practical. Is this different?

Yes. The psychotherapy within the REWIRE Method™ is not standalone therapy. It is one tool within a multi-modal process that also uses NLP, executive performance coaching and clinical hypnotherapy. The goal is belief and pattern change, focused on solutions, not extended processing of the problems, often carried out in other therapy. The speed and direction of the work is oriented toward the specific outcome: removing the patterns limiting your business and leadership performance. Many clients who have found conventional therapy slow describe the REWIRE process as significantly more targeted, far faster and refreshing.

  • Is psychotherapy suitable for high-functioning leaders who are not in crisis?

Absolutely. Psychotherapy for business leaders is most valuable when the leader is functioning well and wants to address the patterns that are creating friction or limiting their ceiling. Crisis is not a prerequisite. In fact, addressing patterns before they become a crisis is considerably easier and more effective, as then you sustain your performance, productivity and success, with no dips.

  • What is the difference between psychotherapy and the NLP and hypnotherapy parts of the REWIRE Method™?

NLP provides the diagnostic framework and belief & pattern-change techniques operating at the neurological level. Clinical hypnotherapy provides direct access to the unconscious mind for applying those changes. Psychotherapy provides the clinical depth for working with the historical, relational, and emotional roots of the patterns being changed. All three operate at different levels and the combination is what makes the change thorough and permanent.

  • Will working on deep psychological patterns affect my professional performance during the process?

Most clients do not experience a significant dip in professional performance during the process. Some describe an initial period of adjustment as old patterns change, but this is typically brief and is outweighed by the performance improvements that follow. The programme is structured to be manageable alongside an active professional schedule.

  • How do I know if my situation requires psychotherapy or whether standard coaching is sufficient?

The diagnostic Reset Call is the right place to establish this. The depth of psychological work required varies between individuals. Nicky adapts to her clients throughout the process with the only focus being optimising change and success during her sessions. For the client, it is something to let go of needing to know the how in detail, and immerse yourself in the work we do in the present.

For example, you don’t get a surgeon to go through every cut and dissection of the surgery beforehand, when they haven’t even carried out all the tests and exploratory work first. And even then, we accept that when they go ahead, they don’t know what they may uncover when they start, and instead expect them as the expert to know what they are doing and trust they will be able to adapt and change in order to making us well again. This is the same here.

  • Is this available for leaders working through complex personal circumstances alongside their business challenges?

Yes. Business leaders frequently come to this work carrying both professional performance challenges and significant personal circumstances, including major life transitions, relationship difficulties, and health challenges. The REWIRE Method™ is designed to address the full person, not just the professional role.
