The short answer
What is NLP coaching and what can it change?
NLP coaching uses proven techniques to change the thought and language patterns that shape how you feel and act. For business owners, senior leaders, and executives that means dismantling self-sabotage, limiting beliefs and stress responses quickly. As a master NLP coach, Nicky Anstey uses it within a wider method, so the change is deep and lasting, not a quick fix that wanes fast. It is about rewiring the foundational mindset using neuroscience to make success feel easier… not a battle.
About this work
What NLP coaching for business owners and leaders means in practice
NLP coaching for business owners and senior leaders is the application of neurolinguistic programming, a framework for understanding and changing the neurological patterns underlying thought, emotion, and behaviour, to the specific challenges of running a high-pressure business or team: imposter syndrome, perfectionism, people-pleasing, extreme pressure, and the anxiety patterns that drive underperformance in high-achieving professionals.
Nicky Anstey is a Master NLP Transformation Coach who uses NLP as the primary diagnostic and rewiring tool within the REWIRE Method™, a trademarked process that combines NLP with clinical hypnotherapy and psychotherapy to produce permanent change in the patterns limiting her clients.
What NLP actually is
Neurolinguistic programming was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, who studied the patterns of highly effective therapists, including Milton Erickson, Virginia Satir, and Fritz Perls, to identify what they were doing that produced change in their clients. The result was a set of models describing how the mind organises experience and a set of techniques for changing the patterns within that organisation.
The “neuro” refers to the neurological processes underlying thought and behaviour. The “linguistic” refers to the role of language in structuring, expressing and changing those processes. The “programming” refers to the patterned, systematic nature of those processes: the idea that the mind runs programmes, and that those programmes can be identified, modified, and replaced.
NLP has been used extensively in coaching, psychotherapy, and high-performance contexts since its development. At the Master Practitioner and Trainer levels, it is a clinically rigorous and highly personalised approach to belief, behaviour and pattern change.
What NLP coaching does that other approaches do not
Most coaching and therapeutic approaches work at the level of conscious thought: the beliefs you hold, the narratives you tell about yourself and your situation, the behaviours you are trying to change. These approaches have genuine value. Their limitation is that they are working at the output level rather than the source level.
Your behaviours, thoughts, and emotional responses are produced by neurological programmes running in your unconscious mind. These programmes were built by experience, run automatically and faster than conscious thought, and produce the responses that then arrive in consciousness as facts about the world rather than as outputs of a programme. That’s why I hear from leaders that they know why they do things and what they need to do differently, but they just can’t do it.
To change those outputs consistently and durably, the programme has to change. Not the conscious interpretation of the output. Not the behaviour bolted over the top of the pattern. The programme.
NLP provides the tools to do this. The diagnostic tools identify the exact programme running, including its structure, its triggers, the specific sensory and representational patterns it involves. The change techniques directly modify that structure at the neurological level.
This is why NLP coaching for business owners, done at the Master Practitioner level, produces change that differs in quality from what standard coaching or cognitive approaches produce. The level of the intervention matches the level of the problem.
How the work moves
How NLP is applied within the REWIRE Method™
Within the REWIRE Method™, NLP serves two primary functions: diagnosis and rewiring.
Diagnosis. NLP provides extraordinarily precise tools for mapping the structure of an unconscious pattern. Not “you have imposter syndrome” but “your imposter syndrome fires specifically in situations involving peer-level evaluation, is anchored to a specific kinesthetic response in your chest, runs a specific internal dialogue with a specific tone and quality, and is producing a specific visual representation of failure that triggers the anxiety cascade.” That level of precision is what makes the subsequent rewiring targeted rather than generic.
Rewiring. NLP includes a range of techniques for directly changing the structure of the patterns identified in the diagnostic phase. These include timeline work, which addresses the historical root of a pattern; submodality work, which changes the neurological coding of a belief or emotional response; parts integration, which resolves internal conflicts between competing patterns; and anchoring, which establishes new neurological responses to specific stimuli. In the REWIRE Method™, these techniques are applied in the context established by the diagnostic work and in combination with clinical hypnotherapy, which deepens the access to the unconscious patterns being changed.
What NLP coaching changes in a business context
For business owners, the patterns that most clearly respond to NLP coaching are the same ones that drive extreme pressure in high achievers.
Imposter syndrome. The belief structure underlying imposter syndrome, the specific way the unconscious has coded the idea that you are not what others perceive you to be, is directly accessible and changeable through NLP. The imposter syndrome coaching work through the REWIRE Method™ uses NLP to identify and change this structure at the neurological level.
Perfectionism. The pattern that links imperfection with danger, that fires anxiety when a task is released before it is impossibly polished, is a specific neurological programme. NLP identifies the structure of that programme and changes the link between imperfection and the threat response. Perfectionism coaching through the REWIRE Method™ produces this change at the source.
People-pleasing. The unconscious pattern that prioritises other people’s comfort over the owner’s own needs and direction is built on a specific set of beliefs and a specific set of neurological responses. NLP maps that structure and changes it. People-pleasing coaching through the REWIRE Method™ removes the compulsive version of this behaviour by changing the wiring that makes it feel necessary.
Performance anxiety. The automatic threat response that fires in high-stakes business situations, the racing heart before the board presentation, the sudden self-doubt before the important decision, is a conditioned neurological response. NLP and hypnotherapy together change the conditioning.
The difference between NLP coaching and an NLP course
A significant number of business owners and executives have attended NLP training programmes and not experienced the transformation they were expecting. This is worth addressing directly.
NLP training gives you a conceptual understanding of NLP and exposure to its techniques. What it does not give you is the experience of having someone with clinical expertise apply those techniques precisely to your specific patterns in a one-to-one context.
The difference between an NLP course and NLP coaching for business owners at the Master Practitioner level is the difference between understanding how surgery works and having a skilled surgeon operate. The knowledge is necessary but not sufficient. The clinical application, built on deep diagnostic work and years of pattern recognition, is where the change comes from.
What to expect from NLP coaching
NLP coaching through the REWIRE Method™ is not passive. It is active, often intense, and requires genuine engagement with the process and desire to change for the better. This is not for people who gain too much from being the victim. The sessions are not conversations about your patterns. They are direct work on the patterns themselves.
Many clients describe a quality of change in NLP sessions that is difficult to articulate: the sense of a pattern that was solid becoming loose, or of a belief that was certain becoming uncertain in a way that feels like relief. The work does not feel like learning. It feels like something shifting.
Between sessions, hypnotherapy recordings reinforce the work done in sessions, consolidating the new neurological pathways. The between-session work is an important part of the process.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is NLP scientifically proven?
NLP has a mixed research record, partly because the heterogeneity of NLP techniques makes controlled trials difficult to design. The individual techniques within NLP, including systematic desensitisation (related to NLP anchoring), cognitive restructuring (related to NLP reframing), and imagery-based change techniques (related to NLP submodality work), have substantial research support within established therapeutic frameworks. The REWIRE Method™ uses NLP within a clinically rigorous process that also draws on psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy, both of which have strong evidence bases.
-
How is a Master NLP Practitioner different from a standard NLP practitioner?
Master NLP Practitioner training represents a significantly deeper level of theoretical and practical training than practitioner level. Master Practitioners work with the full range of NLP change techniques at a level of precision and sophistication not available at practitioner level. Nicky Anstey holds a Master NLP Transformation Coaching qualification.
-
Can NLP help with business-specific challenges like decision-making and leadership?
Yes. The patterns most directly limiting decision-making and leadership in high-achieving business owners and executives, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and people-pleasing, are exactly the patterns NLP coaching addresses most effectively. The application of NLP within a business and leadership context requires the practitioner to understand both the clinical dimension and the business context, which is central to how Nicky works.
-
How many NLP sessions will I need?
Within the REWIRE coaching programme, the NLP work is delivered across the eight weeks of the programme, concentrated in the middle rewiring phase. The number of individual sessions within that depends on the complexity of the patterns being addressed. The programme structure is designed to ensure the work is complete, not to fill a set number of sessions.
-
Is NLP coaching available online?
Yes. NLP coaching is fully effective when delivered online as they are in person, and this is how many of my clients choose to work. The NLP techniques do not require physical proximity.
-
Can NLP help with fear of failure?
Yes. Fear of failure is one of the most common presenting patterns in business owners and executives, and it is directly addressable through NLP. The pattern typically involves a specific belief structure about what failure means, anchored to specific emotional and physical responses that fire in advance of any actual failure. NLP identifies and changes that structure.
